This is an amazing photo of W. Eugene Smith looking out his window on 28th street and 6th avenue in Manhattan. He was a life magazine photographer and a pioneer of the photo essay. He was the people’s champion and he worked tirelessly for them (a speed habit helped a bit too). That same building in which he lived in in 1957 had a all night jazz studio that recoded many of the great jazz musicians of the time. There is a new book of this work called The Jazz Loft. Below is a beautifully composed video of his images and a sample of some of the 3000 hours of audio he recorded in the time that he lived there.
