I found this magazine at the flea market this weekend. It is called Unique and this is only their 4th issue and even tho there is no date on it, I have carbon dated it to December 1977 (ads inside confirm it too).
Like a lot of new publications, Unique was struggling with their identity. They caught a lot of flack for their nude layouts. In the ‘publisher’s statement’ a Mr. Roosevelt Lane Jr. assures readers that “I sincerely feel that the women being displayed in UNIQUE are truly visions of beauty that can satisfy the erotic fantasies of most men.” He concludes with “Therefore, UNIQUE will continue to exhibit Black women with the class and sophistication the so readily deserve.”
Maybe he had not seen this entire issue before he wrote that because this was the centerfold. Note to the reader: I added the Batman photo for our more sensitive viewers)
