I’m Da Best, Man. I Did It

The rap battle is the purest form of hip hop. It has the ability to pluck an unknown rapper out of obscurity and make him king. This is the case with Eli, The Man Who Launched 1000 Remixes,  from a cable access show in the South. This might be the most widely seen battle of all time.  The original clip is 4 min, but I found one that is just Eli’s verse. The edit in the clip that you will see is happening in real time and was not edited later for effect. What happens after the cut is that the music drops out and our new king Eli awkwardly waits for it to make his ultimate comeback.

But what makes this the greatest recovery of all time has little to do with Eli’s rhymes or his mic prowess.  What is so special about this clip is how much love Eli gets from people of the internet community who saw a young rapper flailing and then took his clip and remixed it more times than I have ever seen on Youtube (look here for hundreds of Eli mixes) and turn it into a masterpiece

I will add a few of my favorites at the bottom that include people remixing Eli with a NAS classic, a ‘Runnin From The Cat’ remix and Eli’s clip being used in an a sample that Lil Wayne actually used.
